You must have read or atleast be told during your stay in the Children’s department how David danced before God and danced to nakedness before the LORD God. How did the ark of God left Israel in the first place?
Once upon a time, in the land of Israel, in c1024BC, during the reign of king Saul, the armies of philistines waged a war against the armies of Israel, conquered Israel and took away the most precious thing, which was the ark of covenant from the temple in Israel. The Israelites brought out the ark of covenant from the ancient sanctuary of shiloh, with hope of victory but the nemesis fell on them as the philistines defeated them and took away the ark. Does that mean that the ark of covenant is not powerful or was reduced to nothingness?
Everything happens for a reason, and by covenant, the armies of Israel should not be defeated. But the reverse happened due to the sins of Hophni and Phinehas which include sexual immorality in the sanctuary, taking parts of burnt offering and sacrifices not belonging to the priest(their father) and other omen they committed in the sanctuary.
The Philistines captured the ark of covenant successfully and even killed the two sons of Eli. When Eli was told that his sons has been killed in the battle field he didn’t mind much, however, when he was told that the ark of covenant has been captured, he was shocked, fell on his back and died. Similarly, when the wife to Phinehas heard the news of the departure of the ark of covenant during her child birth, she was shocked and consequently died. Then, the child was named Ichabod which translated “the glory of God has departed”.
In The Time Of King Saul
The ark tarried in Philistine about seven months, and anywhere the ark was placed in the land of Philistines, misfortunes befell them. They even took the ark to the Ashdod and placed it in the temple of Dagon, they philistines perhaps were thinking that the ark of testimony would have no effect in the temple of Dagon. Disappointingly, Dagon laid prostrated before the ark next morning; and while it (Dagon) was restored, if lay prostrate and fell down again the next day. Also, the people of Ashdod were afflicted with tumors and plagues of mice. The ark was later taken to Gath and successively to Ekron, the both cities in philistines were also afflicted with boils. Now, the Philistines believed that YAHWEH is not their mate.
The diviners after seven months the ark tarried in Philistines, advised that the ark be taken back to Israel because it is disastrous to them. Stiff-neck people usually learn in a hard way. The Philistines returned the ark of covenant by themselves accompanying it with offerings which include a golden mice and a golden boil. The Philistines brought the ark to the Field of Joshua, left it there with there offerings and ran away. LOL
The people that reside in close proximity to the field of Joshua offered sacrifices to the ark. Unfortunately, some of them were struck to death by God for looking at the ark inquisitively. Now the dwellers of “the field of Joshua” were intensely afraid and sent that the ark of testimony be removed from them. The ark was removed and relocated to the house of Abinadab and Eleazar his son was assigned to take care of it. The ark stayed in the house of Abinadab for twenty years. King Saul never bordered to bring the ark back to the temple of God probably because he does not usually consult the ark, hence, he was not a man of God’s presence.
In The Time Of King David
At the start of the reign of King David the son of Jesse and a man after God’s heart. David removed the ark from the house of Abinadab and on its way to Zion(where the sanctuary was), the ark drifted as if it was about to fell. One of the ark bearers name Uzzah, in order to steady the ark put forth his hands, and unfortunately for him, God struck him to death. Fearfully, David decided the ark should be placed on the house of Obed-edom ; Obed-edom seemed to be a common man who could not resist the instruction of the king, It is obvious from this paragraph that people were afraid of the ark and seemingly rejecting it due to the case of Uzzah. This means that the ark was dumped in the house of Obed-edom who could not say no.
Fortunately for obed-edom, the ark which killed Obed-edom brought him blessings of God. Probably because his heart was pure. When David saw that Jehovah was blessing the household of Obed-edom, he decided to bring forth the ark back to the temple. So as the levites were carrying the ark of testimony, David whore a linen ephod and was dancing radically before the congregation that converged in Jerusalem. David was dancing enthusiastically with all his might and strength that even his clothe almost wore off.
One of his wives, Michal the daughter of Saul, rebuked and even mocked him saying he was dancing among the handmaids and in the midst of common men. But David replied he was dancing before the LORD who chose him over his father(Saul). David housed the ark in the tent which had had prepared for it, offered sacrifices and also shared food and wines to the people.
This whole story teaches us that no matter your statute, you should worship and dance for God like a child, a child is unaware of his statute. So whether you are the richest man in your church/community, the best singer or instrumentalist, or the general overseer of your church; worship God like a child. God bless you.
