The present age is one that thrives on motivational speakers until recently. Motivational speakers started out as speakers who are passionate about inspiring people to up their games and if done the right way, the motivational speakers themselves get to make money from what they love doing, something they could do for free. But recently, these people have been debunked, Nigerian youths, most especially, disprove almost everything a motivational speaker has to say. On the other hand, most people seem to be going into this motivational speaking thing, some even had other names for it. People like Jay Shetty and a host of others were known all over the world not for any other thing for what they do: motivational speaking.
Now, the question is: Should a Christian listen to a motivational speaker?
Well…. Who is a motivational speaker and what does the person have to offer? A motivational speaker is a person, who speaks with the intent of stimulating the emotions of listeners to act, or do beyond what they think they could do. It could also be done to make listeners look past what they’ve been through, see the possibilities in their seeming impossibilities or to inspire others from their life situations and that of others.
A Christian is one who has believed in Christ by faith, one who follows Christ. Now should a Christian listen to a motivational speaker?
I once heard of a case where a guy who is from another religion listens to a pastor every morning and when asked why, he said that listening to the pastor inspires him and gives him enough strength to go through the day.
Also, in the Christian circle, we have People like Joel Osteen, Steven Furtick and others that are into the motivational ministry, even Priscilla Shirer makes a Stimulcast which can be classified as a faith boosting motivational speaking. Andrew Wommack is also a pastor who operates solely on faith and tells you to see what God has said in all situation as the ultimate.
Motivational speaking if rightly used, is not harmful for even a Christian. A Christian has more than enough to be motivated and inspired. The Word of God is filled with how much God loves us, the unfailing promises of God, how we can do all things through Christ and lots more. Though the Word is life and should not just be regarded as a motivational sentence, the fact that we have God is enough push for us. But at times, life can be so hard on us and we just need something or someone to push us, moments when we feel down and we just don’t know what to do or how to go about things. At a moment like this, I recommend you listen to a faith stimulating word. In times like this, you can listen to Jesus Unhindered Podcast, The Lois Ugbe Podcast and some others. You also listen to Andrew Wommack and Joel Osteen.
Christianity operates by faith, there are times when we might be tempted to doubt some things and you might just need something to need you bring you back to life. Please read your Bible, listening to something in the Christian circle to remind you of God’s love and of His ability to do all things.
As a person, after watching the movies Overcomer and War Room, and reading the book Fervent by Priscilla Shirer, I started writing verses of the Bible with God’s promises in a book, I write what God has done that I really appreciate Him for, I tick answered prayers, I write about God in my diary, so when I have a slight down moment in my emotions, I go back to what I have written and it builds me back to life. When we are tired and we need to keep going, some of these things help with momentum. I even heard of a case of someone that would play different tracks every morning before setting out for the day as a Christian. He listens to recorded tracks with promises from the Word of God. Another listens to Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s faith ministrations, some to Bishop Oyedepo.
They should not just bring you alive for a moment, they should give you the strength you need to get back on your feet, and the Word of God will not just bring you back on your feet, it is able to sustain you on your feet!
So even if you’ll listen to motivational speakers, listen to the right words from the right people. Also, know what to listen to at the right time. It will be wrong for you to listen to a motivational speaking on business success when you are still doubting if you should go into the business. Listening to such a motivational word just boost you into action. First, you need to pray for direction on how to go about things, then you can listen to whatever you want to to inspire you and give you momentum even as the Holy Spirit gives you more help.
A Christian can listen to motivational and inspiring words but not all. Though some are good and they mean no harm, they might not be very great for you. 1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. This is my humble opinion.
